The Grace and Power of Kandyan Dance A Cultural Legacy

 KANDYAN DANCE

The tradition of Kandyan dance comes from Kandy which is located in Sri Lanka. The country considers this practice to be an essential and holy traditions within its cultural heritage. Dancers present themselves in the traditional Ves costume featuring the headdress together with beaded chest protection and rattling anklets. The front of the headdress contains metal components for height augmentation.

Men only can wear the Ves headdress through participation in a religious ritual known as the Ves Mangalya before the ceremony. Many people think that sick or bad luck will affect any female who wears this particular item. Before undergoing the ceremony men are unable to don the Ves. During Kala Eli Mangalya women conduct their special traditional ritual.

A performance of Kandyan dance requires drum music to play. Geta Beraya serves as the principal drum instrument for this dance since it is exclusive to Kandyan dance. Thalampota represents small cymbals that dancers use in order to maintain the beat. Vannams represent a specific category of dance performances accompanied by songs describing animals. The musical instrument Thammattama produces sounds by using sticks as its playing method.
