BOGAMBARA PRISON
The original site of Bogambara Wewa served as the location for building the prison complex. The buildings at the prison were created under the supervision of F. Vine who worked for the Ceylon Public Works Department. The entrance gate along with fortress walls found their inspiration from the Bastille. The prison facility covered 5.3 hectares (13 acres) while offering 408 cells across three stories in a big 382-cell structure. A hospital building existed among the other prison facilities. This facility existed to contain dangerous criminal offenders together with individuals sentenced to death.
