Hanthana’s Sacred Gem

SADAGIRI MAHA SEYA

On the Hanthana mountain range a large new stupa named Sandagiri Maha Seya faces Kandy city. The stupa lies 6 kilometers outside Kandy city center at a distance of 1.7 kilometers from the Ceylon Tea Museum.

You will reach the stupa after taking a windy road to a parking spot adjacent to Sandagiri Maha Viharaya Temple. A staircase leads from the bottom parking lot to the stupa that sits at a height of 930 meters. Visitors who climb to the top of the stupa have an outstanding vantage point that reveals the mountain vistas and majestic Mahaweli River valley.

Among the recent stupas erected in Sri Lanka the Sandagiri Maha Seya stands as one of the biggest. Construction of this structure became possible through donations received by the society. Construction work for the building commenced on January 27, 2017 and finished when they installed the last part that completed the stupa on March 28, 2021. The stupa received its holy dedication during the ceremony of September 10, 2022.

With dimensions extending to 33 meters both in height and width the stupa holds the position of the largest structure of its type in the Kandy district. The centrally situated Kotmale stupa in Nuwara Eliya District represents the biggest structure in the province after this Sandagiri Maha Seya.
